How to Export from PPro CS5 (Windows 7) to edit in Final Cut Pro?
Posted by Andy Garrett on March 10, 2011 at 3:12 amI am shooting 1080P/24FPS on a Canon 60D and then importing the footage directly into Premiere Pro CS5 running on Windows 7. (*If it helps I can transcode the footage to Cineform first.)
I am using Premiere Pro to sync external audio and trim the footage before handing it off to someone who will edit it in Final Cut Pro.
My BIG Question: How can I export the footage using Adobe Media Encoder (specific settings) so that it will be possible to edit it in Final Cut Pro (or a format that the Mac Editor can then transcode to Pro Res for editing in Final Cut) …
Does anyone have a Preset to do this or know the exact Filetype/Settings to accomplish this?
Thank You Very Much.

March 10, 2011 at 7:32 amThe editor can transcode straight to ProRes from the camera file. In Premier go to File>Export>FinalCut XML. This is what the editor needs for a project file. You should be set on your end after that.

March 10, 2011 at 7:00 pmThat doesn’t solve my problem because I need to trim the clips first editing out junk I don’t want others to see. An XML File would not accomplish that as I would still be sending him my original video files.
Is there a way to export video from Premiere Pro CS5 (on Windows 7) to any format that can be read (or transcoded to Pro Res) on a Mac?
Given the $$ I spent for Premiere Pro you would think this could be done.

Calm yourself.
If you need to present only trimmed files, export MOV files, jpeg2000 @ 100%, uncompressed audio. If the files are too hefty for you, you can look into Avid DNxHD or Cineform. Avid has different mbps settings, 185 being the highest quality without being overkill although the files come out on the larger side.
Its free for PC and Mac https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545

Sorry, but I’m still nowhere with this. Export “MOV” files? How? There’s no export setting for MOV files.
Don’t see anything indicating “JPEG2000” either.
“Look into” Avid DNxHD? Not sure if this will help me export from Premiere Pro? Cineform? What about Cineform, how can this help me.
Sorry, I’m very frustrated at Adobe – most people seem to use Final Cut Pro and I guess I’m going to have to throw away the funds I spend on CS5 and switch to Final Cut if I can’t find a solution to this.
Does anyone have specific settings that will allow me to export from Premiere Pro CS5 to edit in Final Cut.
This is a situation that has come up over and over because almost everyone I deal with edits in Final Cut Pro.

March 14, 2011 at 2:16 amWith your edited sequence hit Command M and you get the the export window. Select the .mov setting for a Prores 422 or Prores 422(LT) setting and you can take the results into FCP.

Read the problem properly and then offer advice please. This lack of detail before responding is enough to frustrate further.

March 14, 2011 at 4:00 amHi Andy,
I know you don’t want to hear this, but you are respsonsible for the research you do for your NLE choices not Adobe.
I work with both all the time and have noticed a big swing amongst fellow editors to work in premiere and stay there. FCPs need to convert everything to mov wrappers makes cross platform work tricky. This is the nature of the beast.
If you want to export out the final edit follow previous advice to export with QT jpeg2000 settings…
If you want premiere pro to be final cut pro with the way it media manages a trim edit for cross platform – you only have your own research to blame.
You have the ability to use the export to FCP XML. if you don’t want the FCP editor to see your full files that is not the design as yet. You can use the project menu to remove unused media before exporting the XML file. But that will only remove any media not used in any sequences.
Getting upset won’t help you. Blaming others for your choices does nothing for you either. Keep in mind here that the people you are asking to help you don’t owe you anything.
Seeking advice and being grateful can get you further than ranting about wasted money.

March 14, 2011 at 9:48 amThanks Jon,
Do you know how I can export using QT JPEG2000? I can’t find any settings in Adobe Media Encoder which indicate this?

March 14, 2011 at 10:47 amHi Andy,
When you go to File>Export>Media… you will open the Adobe Media Encoder and have all the settings at hand.
On the right side you can see a whole bunch of drop down listings. Click on the “Format:” You should be able to select Quicktime from that listing. If not, then you don’t have Quicktime installed (which is adobe recommended on installation)
Then from “Preset:” Select the standard of your country (PAL or NTSC). Then select the Video Tab next to Filters tab and select from the Video Codec list “JPEG 2000”. Then make sure all the settings below match your project settings. It will all be based on the DV settings so be sure to match the frame dimensions etc. Audio tab should already be set to uncompressed 48K Stereo etc.
