  • How to Explode, Fragment Text in Motion?

Posted by John Jones on September 16, 2010 at 10:29 pm

I’d like to take some text and have it blow up into fragments that go flying off the screen. Can this be done in Motion?

I’ve been searching and I see how to do “exploding text” but this means zooming in, also I have seen fragmenting text (in After Effects), but I have not seen anything for Motion. Can this be done in Motion and how? Thanks.

I would take a look at the Particle Metrix plug-in: https://idustrialrevolution.com/idrplugins/particlemetrix/index.html
Hope this helps and best of luck.

    Hey,

You do not need to get any third part plug-in if you are just trying to blast/shatter text.

If the text is made in Motion (not made as an image file then imported) all you have to do is select your text file, go to behaviors —> text energetic —> Blast out.

It comes out really good automatically but if its not perfect you can do tons and tons of customization to the effect. I hope this helps.

You can also check out Patrick Sheffield’s amazing book “How To Cheat In Motion”, which includes tutorials for shattering images in various ways using just the tools that come with Motion.

The “blast out” behavior would be good if it blasted each letter in the word to tiny bits, but it shoots the individual letters out instead. So rather than blowing up each letter into tiny fragments it merely moves the entire untouched letter out of the screen. It does a good job of showing that the letters are not really 3d as it rotates them out, where you can see that they have no thickness.

Its 2010, we really should have true 3d text.

I agree, there should be 3D text in these so called “powerful programs” but just a thought, you could always layer the blast out effect. (Add several sizes to blast out as your main does, also you can get a compositing effect like ice shattering and layer that with it as well to make it look like its shattering even more. there is also glass composites as well) You might have to play around with it but the end result should be pretty awesome.
