  • How to Create Specific 70’s Psychedelic Backgrounds?

Posted by Matt Finlin on March 10, 2013 at 3:36 pm

    Hi all you talented folks,

I was wondering if anyone out there could provide some insight on how I could create the psychedelic backgrounds based on this video? I’ve scoured the web and haven’t found anything. Any suggestions would be most most appreciated.

The psychedelia really starts at 1:50

There are a lot of things going on there, but a good starting point for the look at 1:50 would be a combination of the Turbulent Noise and Colorama effects.

For the later parts, experiment with Distort effects. I saw some parts that looked like the Twirl effect would be useful.

    Matte

I concur with Todd. Thats what I thought at first glance.

Fractal Noise with Coloroma are the right effects to start.

That’s been done with video feedback. Get into the arcane mysteries of the CC Time Blend FX plugin, you can make all sorts of psy fx including pretty realistic video feedback. It’s not AT ALL self-evident how to even make it do anything whatsoever so google some tutorials. You’ll need to introduce some noise and yeah probably some colorama as mentioned above, and some echo maybe?

In order to very slight scale/rotate each frame (which you’d need to do to get that kind of swirling feedback going) I found that I had to do weird workarounds because not all effects acutally work with Time Blend FX; I think when I tried it a while back I ended to having to do something like use a single-card ‘Card Dance’ effect because the basic Transform effect wouldn’t cooperate…?

Anyway yes Time Blend FX or just get a camcorder and point it at a tv.
