How to create a scrolling stream of data
Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction in terms of creating a scrolling stream of data. Long story short, the client would like a vertical loop of “data” (numbers, plus and minus signs, etc.) to scroll vertically along the right hand side of the screen for the entire duration of a corporate video (2 to 3 minutes). Each row of these “data numbers” need to appear to be quickly increasing or decreasing.
I was hoping to find either a tutorial or some sort of plugin get me going in the right direction, but so far no luck.
Any ideas and or suggestions would be much appreciated. If it helps I’m editing in Final Cut X.

The Numbers Generator is a great place to start to achieve this effect. There are lots of controls to customise how you want the numbers generated and the default is for AutoAnimate which increments (or decrements) the numbers for you. you can even make them random if you want.
If you then create a Replicator from the Numbers generator you can easily create your rows of different numbers – check the Random Start Frame button to have each row display a different value.
EDIT: Make sure you set your Text Format Style in the Number Generator to Monospace to ensure that the position of the individual numbers doesn’t jump around.

Apologies – I didn’t read your question properly before replying.
In order to get your numbers scrolling you will need an extra step.
Add An Offset filter (from the Filters/Timing menu) to your Replicator.
Add an Oscillate Behavior to the Vertical Offset parameter.
Set the Osciallte Wave Shape to Sawtooth.
And there you have it – scrolling numbers.
The great thing about this technique is it’s incredibly light on system resources – and it looks great.
