How to convert .mov file for editing in Final Cut Pro X?
Posted by Ignacio Holiday on May 4, 2012 at 5:08 pmI’m new to Final Cut Pro X, and I’m trying to convert some .mov footage for editing. I’ve read different things about this here or there, but there are lots of different opinions and I haven’t found one clear tutorial that really lays it all out. I know you need to use MPEG Streamclip, but I’m not sure what the best settings are, and when I converted it it still didn’t work. Any thoughts?

May 4, 2012 at 5:29 pm.mov is just a wrapper. The bigger and better question is what’s inside the wrapper (commonly called a codec). So you can have a .mov file that uses different codecs. It could be DV, HDV, XDCAM, DNxHD, ProRes, DVCPRO, etc. Each of those are different codecs that a .mov can contain.
So what codec is currently inside of your .mov file. Open Quicktime file and choose Window–>Show Movie Inspector (or command+I as a shortcut). A dialogue box will pop up and you can see the video codec listed in there.
FCPX plays well with ProRes as a codec.

May 4, 2012 at 7:48 pmOkay, when I try to install the Apple ProApps quicktime codecs it’s telling me that I must have Final Cut Pro installed on my computer to install the codec. But I do have Final Cut installed. Any thoughts on why it’s not recognizing it?

May 4, 2012 at 9:09 pmOk, so I followed the instructions, unpacked the file with unpkg and went to manually copy the files into my QuickTime folder, but it showed that they were already there. Now I’m really confused.

FCPX don’t need any kind of conversion.
Accepts everykind of h264, mp4, avchd, mts, etc native.
