I have hours of old home movies that I have converted to your standard 720×480 .avi’s awhile back and they are sitting on an external drive. Well surprisingly it seems like all my sibling are upgrading to HDTV’s. What I want to know is that if there is a setting prior to bringing these old .avi’s that can convert them to hi-def? If so where do I go to set this? Or is there a plugin that I should get? I would love to send the family some of these old home movies so they can enjoy on their HDTVs!

    Hi Joe,

There ARE software plug-ins to upres SD to HD, but really, most newer DVD players have hardware upconvert built-in when playing DVD out to an HD display. Either way, you are starting out with a 720×480 source, so I see no benefit in converting to HD and burning to Blu-ray; it will look no better than letting the DVD player or display “blow it up” for you.

Unless you are producing an HD program for broadcast and must mix-in some SD footage, I wouldn’t bother with converting.

Don’t do it. There’s no point. The DVD players or Ps3’s out there have superior upscaling than what Premiere can do. Just make it a 720×480 file and let the machines they’re playing on do the work.

ahhh…well I was concerned about this:

I now have an HD cam….so if I were to say kind of film myself talking prior to an old clip, like introducing it….I thought that my brother or sister with an HDTV would have seizures watching the high def stuff then it switching to the 720×480 clips….do the new dvd players or ps3’s detect the new from the old and even it out?

I am sorry if this is such a noob thing to ask! And I wasnt serious about the seizure thing lol!
