  • How to control the De-Esser filter?

Posted by Ben G unguren on August 10, 2011 at 7:26 pm

I’m trying to, well, de-ess, but the De-Esser filter in PPro has two settings: male/female, and Gain reduction. Applying the filter to my footage doesn’t create any gain reduction, regardless of how I tweak these two settings.

I’ve used De-Essers in other apps effectively, though they’ve had a lot more settings (frequency, attack and release times, etc). Has anyone figured out a way to effectively De-Ess? For now I’m using a low-pass filter, but that reduces some other sounds I want to keep….

    Try the EQ filter.

Soundbooth also has an effect that let’s you capture noise within a silent segment, and apply reduction based on that capture. Just select an area of silence and “capture noise print”, then reduce noise. It can be very effective, although Adobe Audition has many other settings to play with in that same area.

EQ and low-pass both apply a persistent filter to the sound, whereas a de-esser will dynamically engage whenever the chosen frequency and amplitude are present (that’s how I understand it, at any rate). That means that the filtering only takes place when the “s” sound occurs, and allows other high-frequency sounds to continue when there isn’t an “s” occurring.

Though I see that an EQ filter could be preferable to a low-pass, as it can allow sounds above the target frequency to continue as well….
