How to configure the insertion of pictures?
I love the way Vegas lets me drop pictures onto a video. But I want the default length to be 10 seconds, and I want them to fade in and out, instead of instant transitions! How do I set this up?

Not sure how to auto-set the fades, but to change the default image length go to Options | Preferences, choose the Editing tab and set “New still image length (seconds)” as desired.

For fades, while you’re in the Editing tab, enable “Automatically overlap multiple selected media when added”. Set the duration with the next box – Cut-to-overlap.
