  • How to Change a cut sequence setting in FCP without messing up aspect ratio?

Posted by Sarah Harvey on June 20, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I have an already cut sequence that is taking way to long to work with because it was originally created with the wrong codec. I want to change the sequence from Frame Size: HDTV 1080i (16:9) to HD (960 720 16:9)
and the compressor from XDCAM EX 1080i (35mb/s) to DVC Pro HD 720p60. I dont know why the initial sequence was created with XDCam (I took over the project 1/2 way through). When I convert the XDCAM Seq t DVC Pro HD it makes all the clips way too big and distorted. When I try to nest the sequence it won’t allow it because of different source times.
HELP! I can’t seem to find any advice on this subject matter. The reason I want to convert the sequence is because FCP runs way to slowly when it is set for XDCAM compressor. If there is a way to adjust fcp settings to manage XDCAM, that is a solution as well.

    Thanks in advance,
    sarah

Not sure, but if you select all your clips in the new sequence, rightmouse>remove attributes and select Distort as the attribute to remove, does that solve the problem?

    Hi Sarah,
You are making a bit mess for nothing.
If your problem is the XDCAM codec, just change it by Proress.
You don’t need to change any other setting in the sequence.

    Hi there.
I have been cutting all my scenes in different sequences.
I filmed on the 5d mach 2. fcp asked me as usual with all the sequences if i want to change the sequence settings to that of the clip.
After editing 4 scenes(4 sequences) i noticed that the first one i edited was not in the same format as the others.
How do i change it from

    frame size: 720×576 (ccir 601/dv pal(5:4)
pixel aspect ration: pal – ccir 601 (702×576)
    field dominance: lower(even)
    compressorL dv – pal

    to

    1920×1080 (hdtv 1080i (16:9)
    sqaure
    upper (odd)
    h.264

without it becoming a small block in the middle of screen. I tried to stretch it but when i apply digital zooms i can see frame blurring.

    Please help?

Hey, this is an old thread it seems, but I just had the same prob so I figured I’d register. I don’t know what caused the initial problem on my end either, but if your prob is the same I had, it’s a really simple fix.

First start a new sequence with whatever settings you want (easiest way to do that is drag a clip with the correct settings into a brand new sequence, and FCP will ask you if you want to change the sequence to match those settings)

Then go to your already cut sequence, copy everything and paste it into the new sequence.

Then just select all in your new sequence and go to Modify > Conform to Sequence. All your clips will match the new sequence settings (which should be the same as the majority if not all of your clips because that’s the reason you wanted a new sequence in the first place, correct?)

    Hi,

I accidentally start a project with:
frame size 1440×1080, anamorphic 16:9 unticked

I need to change it to:
    frame size 720c576 (PAL CCIR 601 5:4)
    with anamorphic 16:9 ticked.

How do I do this without redoing all the sequences again. I have done 4 sequences with that setting and I need to change all of them.

I’ve tried your method of ‘conform to sequence’ but the result makes the clip pixelated. How do I fix this without decreasing the resolution? the movement was bumpy and pixelated.

    Thanks!

I just had this problem. I had cut a sequence together and it was the wrong resolution for some reason. so instead of making a new sequence with the desired settings and copy and pasting, i just pressed command+0 and changed my sequence settings. then i selected all my clips in my sequence and went to Modify>Conform to Sequence.

if you have a few clips in your timeline that match the sequence settings it will prevent you from being able to select Conform to Sequence. deselect those clips and choose it again.
