How to capture 23.98 HDCAM footage to DVCProHD 1080 29.97 using Kona2 and J-H3 HDCAM Deck?
So this is a fairly specific question…
I’m currently trying to capture footage shot at 23.98fps on a Cinealta. I’m using a Sony J-H3 deck to capture footage over HD-SDI to my Kona2 card using FCP5.
I’m trying to capture to a DVCProHD 1080 29.97 timeline. When I did something similar with native Varicam footage,…it was definitely much easier. I had the deck out put 1080 @ 29.97 and life was relatively easy.
Not so with the J-H3,…after hours of trials with what seemed to be the “logical” method, the only way I ended up getting my capture to work was to set the J-H3 at 23.98 (w/ PullDown). The captured footage is showing that it has been captured successfully as DVCProHD 1080 @ 29.97, but I’m not entirely sure this was the proper way to do this.
Any feedback on this? I was under the impression that you always want to output the proper timebase from the deck rather than have the Kona2 card handle that.
Thanks!
