  • How to blur the outside of the frame, but keep the center/subject in focus?

Posted by Andy Brennan on October 5, 2012 at 1:00 pm

    Hi there!

My video is simple interviews, and I was wondering how I could keep the subject’s face in focus, but then blur the outside/edge of the movie frame.

Is this something that involves “masks”? If so, masks are something I have always struggled to understand and use! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh, and by the way, I have old Premiere Pro 2.0. Thanks!

Take a look at this video tutorial to see how it can be done with an “adjustment layer” in CS6.

The concept here shows how making a transparency/opacity map allows effects to apply across the map and certain regions. The gradient of the map allows for a blur effect to start heavy at the full opacity areas and thin out over the gradient.

Barrie, don’t think Premiere Pro 2 has Adjustment Layers 😉
