  • How to Auto-Orient a 3D object on a 3D path on only 2 axes?

Hi everyone, I’m new to Ae and I’m trying to experiment/explore new techniques.

I’m animating a paper plane along a 3D path. When I enable auto orient it auto orients it on all axes X, Y, Z. This is almost perfect, except I want to be able to control the banking of the plane, in my case the Y axis, independently. Is there a plug-in, script, expression, anything that could help me fix this?

After auto-orienting to the path, you can still open up your rotation property and keyframes orientation or the XYZ rotation.

Hi John, thank you for replying to this.

The problem with the approach you suggested would be that if I enable auto-orient I’d need to then manually keyframe the rotation of each frame of my animation to counteract the rotation of auto-orient on that axis. If I then change my mind on timing or spacing for the position values I’d need to keyframe each frame once again. Whereas if I were able to lock the axis I want to control manually, I could just keyframe the key points and then interpolate.

Let me know if you have a solution for this please.
