  • How to add text on a colored tile to video

Posted by Jeff Davis on February 21, 2010 at 8:46 pm

I’m running Vegas Pro 9.0. I have a talking head video to which I’d like to add the speaker’s name to a colored tile beneath his head. I can add text, and I can add text on a colored background (using a media generator), but if I try to resize the background (using track motion controls) it squashes the text. What’s the proper way to do it? Ultimately, I’d like the tile (with text) to slide in from the left or right, so any tips on how to achieve that would also be appreciated. Thanks.

What you are talking about are called “Lower Thirds”. What I like to do is use the Mask tool in Pan/Crop to cut out the shape of the colored background. This way you don’t have to resize anything. Then just add a Text media event above it and adjust the text size using the font properties. To make the whole thing slide on and off, use a Push transition. This is the easiest way I have found to quickly add lower thirds from scratch.

When you press the LOCK ASPECT RATIO button in the TRACK MOTION WINDOW, you will not squash the text. And even better would it be when you generate the text and the background on different layers. That would give you maximal flexibility.

Your suggestion works great, John. Thanks. Is it possible to push the mask AND the text, so the tile and text slide on together?

Just add a Push Right to both events (Text and Lower Third) to move them together. Like this:
