    In the show, I assumed they were shot in front of a green screen and then composited over the footage. Just add a generate > fill and change the color to black and you should be good to go.

    The “fill” effect, then you change the color to black.

    Course I’m just giving you one recipe for creating silhouettes, probably a 100 different ways to accomplish that type of look.

    As a beginner in AE, you should really start here [link]. Adobe’s Todd Kopriva collected together a bunch of resources designed specifically to help someone new to the software get up to speed with as little frustration as possible.

    That being said, another way to achieve the effect would be to shoot your characters (unlit) in front of a brightly lit wall and then color correct that shot so they’re black and the wall is white and either luma key them out or just set the layer’s blending mode to Multiply.
