  • How Split Stereo Audio To Two Mono Tracks

Posted by Tom Salyer on March 28, 2012 at 5:48 pm

I’ve recorded a lav mic to the left channel of my audio file, and a boom to the right.

Is there a way to separate this stereo file into two independent mono files that I can work with on a timeline?

I can duplicate the stereo two-mic track, apply the Fill Right effect to one copy, and the Fill Left Effect, to the other, and I end up with two stereo tracks, one with two L sides, the other with two R sides. But this seems awkward.

And/but, I want to work with mono dialog tracks, correct?

I’ve tried creating a sequence with two mono tracks, no stereo audio tracks, but then the sequence will only let me bring in the two-mic track as a stereo track.

How do I split them ?

    Thanks. Tom

I believe I’ve found out two methods to answer my question … corrections gladly accepted :

    1) Setup a new project > Premier Pro > Preferences (on a Mac)> Audio

in the Source Channel Mapping area/ Audio Channels, choose Mono from the Default Track Format drop down menu > OK

Now when ever you pull a video clip with stereo audio track, or a stereo audio track, onto the timeline, the
audio tracks automatically show up as two mono tracks on the timeline.

    2) Select a video with stereo audio file or a stereo audio file in the Project Panel > Clip > Audio Options > Breakout To Mono

Now the video/audio files shows up with xyz.mov Left & xyz.mov Right underneath the original file in the Project Panel

Pull two broken apart mono tracks onto timeline.
