This is a clip from X Men 2 where the character transform his skin to metal

I think I can do this by create a model, animate it to match the actor and mask it in. However without motion capture that would be pretty hard.

Is there any other way to achieve this effect? I’m not about to make metal skin so reflection isn’t important.

I haven’t watched this tutorial, but it looks like there is some basic skin replacement techniques here.

That tutorial is just use 2d tracking to replace a semi-flat surface, I believe the only way to replace a whole body is to composite a 3d model in.
