I’ve talked to various dealers about various configs for my small post house. Since they are all trying to sell me something, I never seem to get good info. We have 2 macs and 1 pc. Running Avid Media Composer (1 with Adrenaline HD) and also running FCP on the Macs. We got talked into buying a Facilis Terrablock. It’s the biggest piece of junk and we hate it. Crashes all the time, locks up, especially on the Mac. Plus, for Avid projects, we have to copy the project file from one partition to another to transfer work from one machine to another. Total workflow problems. Quicktime Reference files don’t work from one machine to the next, etc. I wish we could just have one big shared drive that all my computers can see and read/write to. No more waiting for the partitions to “re-index” no more worrying if we are copying over a newer version of a project.
But at the same time, the XSan solution seems so over the top for my little facility.
    What are the other options?

For starters, you can’t run Avids on XSAN. They need either NTFS or HFS+. This is why MetaSAN makes for a great fit for both Avids and FCP. There are even Unity features for PC-based Avids. MetaSAN is also a file-based SAN which will give you the flexibility you are looking for. Check it out at https://www.metasan.com

Holy Creative Cow! Who knew this forum has so much power???
Since I posted about our troubles with the Terrablock I have gotten about 30 phone calls from both the dealer and Facilis to help us with our issues with the Terrablock. This is a great example of why people should think before they post. (And also why I wish I could remember the login for my more anonymous username.)

Various dealers (not our usual one) have been whispering in my ear that I need different solutions than the one I have. That coupled with all the glitches we’ve had with the Terrablock, really got me steamed. Well… now I’m getting good intel! First, we are running the Terrablock on old, known bugs, software. I’m several upgrades back, and since I have my email junk filters set to super-high, I never heard about it. Second, we never made time for our dealer to come out and train us on the proper use of our SAN. All the time on these forums I see people cobbling together systems on their own and I think, “that’s dumb. You need a pro to integrate everything or it will never work.” And then we did just that. So Okay! Egg on my face! Next time I will RTFM!

The Terrablock is a way better solution than the XSan for a facility my size. The price is right. AND, they really stand behind their product. I’ve got the phone records to prove it:)
