  • How much HD space should I have free for Vegas 12?

Posted by Sam Rosenthal on March 20, 2013 at 11:56 pm

I am running Vegas 12 on a Bootcamped Mac. I made my Windows partition 104GB, and currently there is 68 GB free. In another thread today, Stephen Mann wrote: “Encoding a 30-second project shouldn’t tax a system with 53Gb of free disk space, but around here when there is less than 100Gb, the disk is, for all practical uses, full.”

Which got me wondering…. just how much empty disc space do you recommend?

My video files are all located on an external drive with over 400 Gb of free space. All i have on the Windows Partition is Windows 7 and Vegas.

I have 823 GB free on the Mac partition, and no plans to use much of that. Should I increase the size of the Windows Partition? How big do you suggest I make it?

I am currently working on short music videos. 4 or 5 minutes long. They render out fine. My problem is during editing, when Vegas 12 locks up pretty regularly. I often get a lock-up where the Vegas window greys back. It does all sorts of weird things. Sometimes i’m previewing and the audio keeps running, but the video locks. Sometimes Vegas locks up when I try to add a file to the trimmer. Sometimes it locks up when I hit “play.” Really, no rhyme-or-reason.

I’m wondering if it’s because my partition is too small?

    Thanks for your advice.

What interface does the external hard drive use? Thunderbolt? Firewire? USB 3? USB 2? (or a USB 2 drive plugged into a USB 3 port?)

Could it be that your drive interface isn’t fast enough for streaming the video files to Vegas Pro? That’s the only thing I can think of. A drive with 68GB free should be fine for editing.

Probably not. Around here we consider a disc with less than 100Gb free as full because our projects tend to take 50 to 75 Gb, often more, to store all of the work files for the whole project. This includes any artwork for the DVD label and menus, credit roll files, original video materials, and any slides or other client supplied materials.

That said, the white screen could be a result of not enough resources. I get it sometimes when any program uses some paging space, but I just wait it out.

With Vegas running, go to the Resource Monitor (resmon) and in the memory tab, sort on the commit column to see if there’s something hogging the resources that can be stopped.
