  • How many hard drives for FCP in a MDD G4?

    Hi Everyone –

I’m not really sure what forum to ask this in, so I hope that this is okay.

I’m currently using a MDD Dual 1.42G G4 to run FCP under Tiger. I’ve got 2 Hard Drives installed, both on the ATA100 interface – one for media and one for the system.

I’m also running an older dual 450M G4 for a Pro Tools Mix rig. It works fine, but the PT Mix system will only run under Panther.

I’m moving to a smaller place and would like to be able to use the Pro Tools system with the MDD G4, which would also make audio transfers easier.

What I’m thinking of doing is installing 2 hard drives on the ATA66 interface for system drives, dedicating one for Panther and one for Tiger as a dual boot system. I’d also put 2 drives on the ATA100 Interface and format them as a RAID.

Does anyone see any big problems with this plan? Is it a stupid idea to put the 4 drives inside a MDD G4? (It’s supposedly designed for that, but who knows)

I’m trying to find the flaws with this plan, and possibly an alternative.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

I’ve run at least 3. The ATA 66 is fine, but check on the maximum drive size limits. Might be 128, might be 180, might be 250. Don’t know. In my experience, the more drives you throw at it, the hotter it gets in there. It’ll hold 4, but you might shorten their lifespan.

I’m running 4 drives in my MDD 1.42DP G4 without any problems.
I actually have all 4 striped to one fast Raid and use an external firewire drive as my system drive.
So I do not see any problems with what your planning.

Thanks so much for the responses guys! I think that’s what I’m going to do – it’ll save a lot of hassle.

What RAID type would be best to use for the media drives? This is the first time that I’m setting up a RAID, so I’m not really sure what my best options are.

    Thanks again!
