    Hello,

I just contacted Adobe tech support and was told by a supervisor that PPro CS4 can use only 2 cores for RT playback when running on OSX, but can use more than two cores when running on Vista 64 (on a 4 or 8-core machine).

He also informed me that PPro CS4 is 32-bit for OSX and 64-bit for Vista 64.

The tech supervisor did not seem entirely sure of himself, and had to take a 5 minute break to look up the answers to questions regarding multi-core processing, so I wanted to post here to be sure.

    1. How many cores can PPro CS4 use for RT playback if running on an 4 or 8-core machine on Vista 64? On OSX?

    2. How many cores can PPro CS4 use for rendering directly within PPro CS4 on an 4 or 8-core machine on Windows 64? On OSX?

I am currently using FCP6, which can use only 2 cores for RT playback, but can utilize multiple cores for rendering done in transcoding app Compressor (with a 4 or 8-core machine). The user can specify how many cores max can be used.

I am considering switching to PPro. FCP7 is suspected to be 64-bit, but no one knows, nor does anyone know if it will utilize over two cores for RT. If it is true that PPro CS4 can only use two cores for RT on OSX, I may wait until CS5 to see if I should switch to PPro or upgrade to FCP7 for max RT.

    Thanks for your time,
    Chris

On Vista 64 all cores are used for all tasks.

“On Vista 64 all cores are used for all tasks.”

Um, thats just a plain faster system than FCP — as in two to four times faster. Thanks.

Anyone know the answers to the other questions?
