How good of a laptop do I need to run Sony Vegas effectively?
I’m currently running Vegas on a 5 year old PC and it definitely slows up a lot when ive got too many video clips in a project, also my computer runs out of memory when I try to render a project that’s too long. My PC only has like 3 gigs of ram and a single core processor I believe, so I’m looking to get a new laptop.
How good would my laptop have to be to be able to run it without these problems? Like how much ram would I need and how much processor speed would I need? Thanks!

That depends on whether you’re working with HD or SD and if you plan to use a lot of FX or not. I’m going to assume the worst.
I wouldn’t get anything that didn’t have an Intel Core i7 quad core in it. Make sure it’s over 2.0Ghz. There are a lot of laptops with quad cores that only have 1.6Ghz processors; that’s just too slow. You want at least 2.2 or 2.4Ghz. Stay away from the Core i5 or Core i3 because it won’t be enough power for media creation. 8GB of RAM seems to be a good amount for working with HD. Try and get one with Windows 7 64-bit although that might be hard to do now that Windows 8 is out.
Note: you can get a lot more desktop for the same money as a laptop. A laptop that is powerful enough to edit HD video is going to be expensive (i.e., it’s not going to be one of the $599 models).

Thanks, that’s really helpful, I found a $750 laptop with an i7 in it that looks good. How important is the video card? The one I’m looking at has a “GeForce GT 610M”
Also I dont use any effects I just use raw HD footage

The video card is important if you use GPU accelerated FX or AVCHD footage or if you want to take advantage of GPU accelerated AVC renders. I’m not sure how much any laptop GPU is going to help because none of them are very powerful. It’s good that it’s NVIDIA because that’s what all the video editing software supports. I couldn’t fine the 610M on the NVIDIA site but the 620M has 96 CUDA cores which is average. I’m sure it won’t hurt. It’s more important to get the Core i7 than anything else because the GPU can assist but the CPU really does much of the work.
