How does the Sony HXR-NX5U GPS capability work?
I am interested to know more about the GPS capability of the Sony NX5. My company uses a professional camera out on field surveys to take video imagery of coastlines. We need to upgrade our camera, which also means finding a new way of capturing video with GPS information burned onto one set of tapes.
How does the GPS function on this camera actually work? Where is it stored? How can it be viewed? We need time information as well as lat/lon for every second of imagery for our work.
Please respond if anyone has any information about this feature.

The GPS information is encoded as metadata. Currently you can use our Content Management Utility software to view the GPS info through your web browser.

I will add my thoughts to your application also.
It appears to me that it will take some custom software to extract the metadata for each clip and make it into a format that burns it into the image on the screen. That is not available in the camera, nor in the software utility that comes with the camera that Ian referred to (The content management utility).
Don’t buy this product expecting it to do what you want out of the box. However, if you can’t find a camera that does, it might be possible to hire someone to write some software, that in conjunction with a video editor, could post process the files and create what you are looking for.

John is correct in that CMU will not extract the GPS info though it does allow you to plot/follow it on a map. We are working with a few different software vendors on tools for extracting it but right now the capability is limited.

That is a very interesting question.
I don’t know the answer to it, since I haven’t been searching for it.

A coworker of mine found this program called DVMP Pro. It’s a tool used through Adobe Premiere that can burn on a time stamp and GPS coordinates that is stored in the hidden metadata.
Has anyone ever used or heard of this tool? Any thoughts?
This seems like the best option for us so far.

How much does it cost to download the Content Management Utility software? Or is it a free software?

It is free software, downloadable from the sony support page for the camera.
Sony did something idiotic, however, and when you are installing the software, you have to have the camera plugged into the computer for verification of a supported camera.
Like who would want the software by itself?
