  • How does 5D Mark 3 compare with Mark 4?

Posted by Neil Orman on November 28, 2018 at 3:08 pm

For the last five years, I’ve use my personal Mark 3 for video and have been happy with it. I work as a video producer at a nonprofit, and my employer offered to purchase an equivalent camera. But B&H said they don’t carry the Mark 3 anymore, and offered the Mark 4. I’d be grateful for any quick feedback on whether people are happy with the Mark 4 for video? How does it compare to the Mark 3? I’d also be interested in knowing if there is any significant learning curve with it? I assume it’s pretty similar but would be grateful for any feedback here.

    Much appreciated, Neil

Well the Mark III is a 1080p camera, unless you install MagicLantern then you can shoot actual RAW CinemaDNG. Also there is a version that shoots 4K cropped.

The Mark 4 is an excellent camera that shoots 4K cropped. So your lenses will have an increased apparent FOV. It’s a good camera. Also take a look at the BlackMagic Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K

Much appreciated, Warren. It’s great that it shoots 4K. Do you happen to know roughly how much that increases the file sizes for the video? Twice as much?

It shoots Motion JPEGs which is a bigger format than H.264, plus the frame size is 4096×2160 so probably 4x bigger.

    the biggest difference is:

mk3 can use “magic lantern”, mk4 cannot.
so no 2.5K RAW 14bit for the mk4, which is in my eyes not worth the upgrade.

magic lantern makes the old mk3 such a valuable tool again.
the 4K from the mk4 is not that great, better tools for it.
