  • How do you monitor specific channels on the Zoom H4n?

Posted by Ryan Foregger on September 30, 2011 at 4:02 am

I picked up a H4n yesterday and have been searching ever since for a way to record all 4 channels in 4-Channel mode, but only monitor channels 3 & 4.

Say I’m running two lavs into the Zoom and would still like the built in mic, but don’t need to hear it while I’m recording.

I must be missing something very straightforward.

    Any ideas?

    Hi
I dont think youre missing anything.
Ive hunted through the menus on mine and it doesnt appear that you can do that.
Id never realised it, as Ive never found any use for the 2 microphones on the unit so its never presented as a problem to me.

Fire off an email to the manufacturers asking for a feature.

Here’s what I’ve determined to be the best “solution.”

If you choose the menu item MIXER you can select the mic and dial them all the way down to mute. This mutes monitoring them and you don’t see the levels (a little annoying) but you are actually recording the internal mics.

Then I pan the input channels, 1 Left, and 2 Right.

So when I record, I can’t see or hear the internals but they are rolling for safety, just in case sake.

I think it would have been better for Zoom to use some off those “Quick Buttons” 1-4 for something more practical than say changing the recording format.

Ahh well, a little more scratch and I’ll get a mixer and not monitor the recorder as much.

Slightly different question, do you guys know if you can switch between monitoring inputs 1 and 2 on the zoom H4N?

So if you have two lav mics attached you can monitor one at a time?

    Many Thanks
