  • How do you monitor SD and HD projects on one system?

On our FCP system, we primarily edit video acquired with Betacam gear. We presently use a Kona LS card to interface analog component in/out of the system.

Now we’re wanting to start doing some work in HD. We’ve made a decision to start with a Sony HVR-A1U HDV camera mostly because it is decent quality, and cheap. For future needs, we are closely looking at XDCAM HD, but we don’t want to take that kind of “plunge” just yet. I figure we can interface the Sony HDV camera and the Mac with a simple Firewire connection. That will get our video in/out of FCP.

However, today we thought of monitoring our HD as we edit. How do we do this? Will we need a SD monitor for when we are working on Betacam projects, and a HD monitor for our HDV projects? For space reasons, we really don’t want to have two video monitors (along with two computor monitors).

What will we need to properly monitor our editing sessions when the edit system will be used for both SD and HD projects?

Nope, you good high quality HD monitor that also displays SD. Our Kona 3 has both Component and SDI outputs which can display either HD or SD. We have the Sony PVM20L5/1 monitor in one room and the Sony PVM14L5/1 in the other. Both monitors are multiformat and auto-detect the SD/HD signal.

Since these are no longer made, I would suggest you look at the Panasonic 1700W and 2600W LCD screens which do the same thing.

    Walter,

Thanks for that info. I assume that our SD-only Kona LS card is officially obsolete now? Will we need a Kona LH or a Kona 3 now?
