How do you match lenses, if some lenses look sharper than others?

It’s because sometimes you’re in focus and sometimes you’re not.

No I meant sometimes when I am on in focus I cannot tell cause people say the zoom lenses are softer than primes, but I cannot tell a difference in softness when it focus.
