How do you make the time line scoll along with the play-cursor?
You’re lookng at your time line. You hit the space bar to play your program. When the cursor gets to the edge of the time line, it just marches along and continues to play a part of the program that is not on that section of the time line.
Surely there is a way to make the time line scroll along and keep up with the cursor. Where’s the hidden button to achieve this?

However, I can’t believe FCP doesn’t have some way to scroll the time line along with the curser.
My gosh, even Media 100 does that! 🙂

My standard answer to all statements like that is why didn’t you know that before you purchased FCP? People really point out a lot of things it doesn’t do, but there’s a lot of things, like the 3-Way Color Corrector, that kicks the butt of many NLE’s out there. It’s amazing to me how many people purchase the software, start using it and then say “Why doesn’t it do what this other NLE does?” Research and testing are vital to anyone purchasing an NLE tool.
so the timeline doesn’t scroll, what’s the big deal? When you stop playback the timeline jumps right to the point at which you stopped. I simply scroll along manually with the timeline when I want to. I used Media 100 for 6 years and you couldn’t pay me enough today to make me switch back or switch to any other NLE.

I didn’t mean to hit a sensitive spot there. Since I put in the “smiley icon” 🙂 I thought it was clar my comment was intended as a joke.
Sometimes this Internet stuff just doesn’t communicate as effectively as it should! (That line was kind of intended as a joke, too.)

No timeline scrolling and no decent title app within FCP. These have always been on my wishlist for every FCP upgrade since 1.2.5. It’s hard to explain to someone that hasn’t used a specific NLE (Discreet edit*, PPro 1.5, Fast Blue, etc. etc.) how important these little feature tweaks are. I would also love to see FCP autosave everything like all the FAST and Pinnacle products do, so you NEVER lose work, even when the app crashes. Just because FCP is a great app doesn’t mean it can’t continually be improved upon.

FCP Studio comes with Livetype and Motion. That’s about as good as it gets short of using After Effects.

Boris 3D is excellent for titling since it’s a vector based app, as is LiveType. Motion has even more fun stuff.

Hi,
I’m with you on this one. I asked this exact question earlier on today due to my love of the feature on Avid. But, the fact I can at least scroll it manually by ‘shift/scroll-wheeling’ at least means I can do it.
I’m learning there’s a few things that FCP doesn’t have that would be nice – and a few nice things it has that aren’t on Avid etc – we all just gotta wait until Bill Gates buys everyone over and makes MicroAvidCutPro100Vegas before we’re all happy.
But, at least there’s a ‘work-around’ for most things we think we’re missing.
I just wish I could change the track colour….

Ummm, doesn’t FCP 4+ have autosave. I am pretty sure I remember that option in there somewhere.

User Prefs, Autosave, set it to whatever time you want. I leave the thing turned off and just use Apple+S all the time.
