How do you make the time line scoll along with the play-cursor?

Here’s what I do guys. I’ve mapped “OPTION+” and “OPTION-” to my microsoft mouses’ scroll wheel.
This zooms in and out on the timeline. When a large timeline is playing I just zoom out a little and then zoom in
a little. Very handy when watching a very long piece. I mainly do docos and long tv shows so couldn’t live without this.
If you want to try this you will need to get Microsoft’s old driver as the new one doesn’t have the ability to map the scroll wheel. Email me if you’d like a copy.Cheers

Have you ever used a program such as TitleMotion? I wouldn’t even call TitleMotion excellent, but its light years ahead of clunky Boris 3D.

Been using it since they released it for corporate and broadcast work. What’s so bad about it? Vector based graphics that look pristine on output. What more do I need?

No, but why would I? I have Boris 3D, LiveType, Motion and After Effects. If I can’t create a simple lower third using any of these tools, then I’m pretty hopeless.

Okay Walter, the fact that you haven’t ever used a titler like TitleMotion (PC only unfortunately) explains how you might call Boris 3D excellent.
TitleMotion is a heck of a lot better layed out, and makes it very, very simple to create multiple cards based upon a design you’ve already created. Its all vector-based, and a breeze to create all kinds of vector shapes, and a breeze to color and to create very sophisticated BG gradients. Trust me, you would like it…

Just to make things clear, I also use Boris RED, Continuum, After FX, Shake, Combustion, Lightwave, Particle Illusion, Motion, Live Type, Mirage etc. and still pine for an app like Inscriber’s Title Motion within FCP itself. As I said before, if you haven’t had the pleasure of working with it, you of course will be happy with what you’ve been given. In all the other apps you mentioned, you still have to go into another app to make decent titles with vector shapes as well as just text. Even though the integration between FCP, Motion and Live Type is a little better now, it still doesn’t touch Inscriber’s product. You could do all of your lower thirds work, bullet animation AND see your text over whichever background frame (wherever your timeline cursor is parked) that you wanted. I can always kick out killer title animation with any of the other methods you mention, but none are as elegant as Title Motion. And isn’t Apple and FCP studio all about elegance??
As far as the Pinnacle/Fast products, the autosave is automatic after every keystroke. That again is excellence! -

The background frame is the key thing here, I used Titlemotion for 3 years and I liked it a lot, but if I could have either that with background frame or Livetype with no background frame, I would choose Livetype every single time, I don’t find it a major pain to export a second or two of video into Livetype if I need it. Every single time I show a client what it can do, it always gets a smile!
I’m also with Walter on the Boris titler, for down and dirty text work it’s absolutely fine and the quality is great.

Yes, but unfortunately “down and dirty” is all you get, and without animatable vector shapes!! After working the smart and easy way, having to export anything to any other app just to do titling is counter-intuitive to say the least. And more time-consuming.

As with a large majority of the discussions here on the COW, it all comes down to personal choice doesn’t it. Your “smart” way may vary from mine!
