  • How do you get the Event to go back and copy all files to the Final Cut Events folder?

Posted by Robert Bracken on November 30, 2011 at 9:59 pm

When I was importing the videos I had unchecked the box
“Copy all files to the Final Cut Events folder”

Now that I’m half way through editing my video, how do I get the Event to start copying all files?

A question first, why do you need to do this?

It will help me answer you, I am not asking why WOULD you need to do this, but what is the reason behind it as there could be several different answers.

The reason is to archive the event and project to Blu-ray DATA discs so I can re edit the project in the future without having to reconnect the media.

When I edited the project the first time my video files are ALL over the place. This time around I want to edit the project and archive the whole thing again.

Got ya. Well, if your files are native h264 files, you can choose to transcode them which will bring them in.

Or you can choose to “organize” the event. Select the Event and choose File > Organize Event.

If files are spread out amongst disparate drives in a Project, you can choose to “Consolidate Project Media” under the same File menu to one drive (keeping separate Events).

Why even after you organize the event would it keep separate events?

What I figured out is that if you have red file, which means it needs to be reconnected, if you re-import the file back into the event then it automatically reconnects the footage.

It will reconnect the footage even if it has changed places.
Obviously the media has to be the same footage from before with the same duration. You can recapture the footage and give it the same name.

[Robert Bracken] “Why even after you organize the event would it keep separate events?”

Keeping separate Events would be if you used the “Consolidate Project Media” on a Project (not an Event). This will bring media to the same drive if they are spread out over different drives, but keep the Event structure.

If you then wanted to combine those Events, then you would use the “Merge Events” command.

If your media is already on one drive, then the “Consolidate” function won’t work as everything is already on the same drive, just in separate Events. If you wanted to combine those, you would use the “Merge Events” command.

If your media is on a separate drive via alias, then you would use the “Organize” command which will simply bring in any media to the Event that’s not already there in it’s native form.

Or, like I said, you can choose to transcode which will place a higher resolution copy of the media in the Event. This will increase the disk space required.

    In summary-

Organize: Bring media in to Event
Merge: Combine Events in to one Event
Consolidate: Used on a Projects not Events. Bring media from separate Events AND Drives to one hard drive, keeping event structure

[Robert Bracken] “What I figured out is that if you have red file, which means it needs to be reconnected, if you re-import the file back into the event then it automatically reconnects the footage.”

As long as that file hasn’t changed, then yes it works. This won’t work (for example) if you render out a new animation replacing the old file. Nothing you do will get that to reconnect at this time.

Hell yeah. That fixed the problem.

    Thanks,

    Thanks,”

No worries. Which one did you choose?

I’m going to wait until I’m done with the project and then organize the event.

    Thanks for the tip!
