  • How do you create black boxes behind subtitles?

This should be quite easy you would think. The way I’ve been doing it is to cover the bottom portion of the screen with a semi-transparent black rectangle but it looks ugly as it’s showing even when the subtitles aren’t.

Just make the black box as long as each sub title and only display it when the subtitle is displayed.

Far too much work (documentary length film). There’s got to be an easier way.

Nope, that’s what I’ve got. I only wish for the rectangle to be the size of the width of the text so that it hides as little of the screen as possible.

    Ah, understood.

So you’re be wanting the “boxes” to grow to the same size as the length of text – yes?

    Like this?

In which Case use Pro Type Titler. That’ll give you Black Backgrounds (or any coloured BG) that will grow or shrink to fit your text.

    Cheers

Vasst has some lower thirds Fasst Apps on sale this week. But they are cheap even if not on sale. They would look better than just a black square in the background. Alternately, use Photoshop to make your lower-thirds: Photoshop Lower Thirds Example
