I just received and finished sequence from our vendor that was shot on the canon 5d or something like that, anyway they gave me a true 30 fps at 1280×720 ProRes HQ file thats about 12 min long. How can I convert this to 29.97 at the same size? Things I’ve read say that after a while the 30p footage becomes out of sync if you just drop it into a 29.97 sequence. And that you’re to slow down the audio by something like 99.98%.

How do I make this work? I also have upConverted 480i30p DV material to 1280×720 at 29.97. My deliverable is not broadcast but needs to be HD for presentations and then I’ll be downconverting for DVD.

Use Cinema Tools to conform it to 29.97fps. The change is instantaneous. It basically just tells Quicktime to play your file at 29.97. The speed change is extremely small and imperceptible.

Thanks John. Is this the best and/or only option? Or is there another way? I guess I’m asking if this is what most facilities would do with this type of footage.

It doesn’t come up much. Not many devices record at 30fps.

    Good luck.

If you are unsure, duplicate the file In Finder and make the change on the duplicate. It should not be a big deal unless you are editing with double system sound (does not sound like that is the case…your audio is embedded in the same file with the video).
