  • how do you add music to your edits?

    hi,
i would like to get everone’s take on their method of adding music to their edits.

as i watch tv i notice that music is changed in order to transition to a new segment or topic of the video.

when you are editing are you editing to the music choice that you made already for the scenes? or are you laying out a fully edited piece, and then go back and add in the different music tracks and tweaking your edits to that?

    what is the best process?

Depends on the program type – for the most part, films, drama, and sitcoms do the edit first to meet story, time, etc. and the music is that added as needed to bring further enhance the story being told.

For other edits, like music videos, show openers, video montages, etc.. the music is most often the driving influence behind the edit, so it’s dropped in first and the edit is built around it.
As was said earlier, in narratives, the story is king so the music is added, in most cases, afterwards to add some spice… In a lot of cases, composers are hired to write the music to suit the edit after it’s been locked.

what about for corporate video stuff or tv shows on the food network? or home and garden tv?

Corp stuff is usually pretty easy. Drop it in after your edit if you are using canned tracks…it’s generally used as a sound bed to bridge your soundbites together and make everything flow.
I would assume that Home Garden/Food TV stuff, you’d do something similar, drop it in afterwards matching music to the theme of the episode. In corp/hg/food, the story is still king…you’re providing information to a viewer, they could probably care less about the music as long as it suits the scene and doesn’t interfere with what’s going on.

lots of times it seems like the edits are cut to the music on food tv. so maybe they do the music along side the edits?

Could be. Tweaking your edit to match some key points in the music can help a bit with the flow. I like to hide some cuts by timing them around a beat. It’s also a good chance that network TV programs have their own in house composers.
