  • How do people manage without proc amp control?

    Hi all.

I’m somewhat new to the Io but I’m a little mystified as to how people obtain optimal results without control over analog levels.

As far as I can tell, there’s no way to adjust the incoming picture in order to make the most of your dynamic range, which is especially important when you’re going to 8-bit. The control panel app shows some controls for picture adjustments, but they’re disabled.

    What have people been doing?

    Thanks for any insight.

I’m not sure (as we haven’t yet installed them) if either the new control panel or V2 driver addresses this issue. However, your editing app should allow all the picture control you need. In FCP there is a Proc Amp plugin, as well as a couple of color correctors that can do the job. There are on-screen indicators of illegal chroma and gain as well as vector and waveform scopes on the capture input and while playing clips. We capture 8-bit uncompressed from BetaSP and use the deck’s TBC to adjust video parameters. We also have external Tek waveform and vectorscope monitors (which match right up to FCP’s scopres). Typically, we adjust to bars on the source tapes and tweak inside FCP. This way if we ever have to go back and re-capture footage we get the best match as all the adjustments are saved with the edl.

this has been the problem from the beginning of time. Most VTR’s have
optional TBC remote controls with Proc Amp controls on them like the Sony UVR-60, and other cheaper models that you find in the Markertek catalog. More pro machines, like PVW-2800, and DVW-A500 have proc controls on the VTR. But via software, this has only most recently become a feature in the control panel.

Yeah, but if I understand AJA correctly, the CP can’t be used w/ FCP, so no Proc Amp via software yet. But to be honest, I’ve yet to come across a tape where I’d want to proc the entire input on digz instead of a filter. Guess I’m working w/ better shooters these days. 😉 Sheesh, I remember how estatic I was when I figured out how to save the D2 vid output setting in a hexdex stream embedded in the ACE editor commands. (My boss wouldn’t pay for the remote TBC head. sigh.)

I don’t have any way to adjust the video before it gets to the Io, so I guess I’m stuck with what’s coming from my S-VHS deck (yes, S-VHS; I’m archiving personal footage).

I wanted to make any general signal-level corrections before capturing to DV50, since any subsequent corrections require recompression; since I’m planning to archive the final edit on a DVCPro50 deck via FireWire, most of the original captured frames should make it through the process without recompression.

    Regards,

I always thought that the difference between “NTSC US” and “NTSC J” presets was just that, the setup difference.

But anyway if you can calibrate your SVHS deck, you can forget about proc amps and setup since you’ll be recording your black level correctly.
