How do I work in anamorphic without distorting my still images?
Firstly, thanks for helping me out. My question might seem like a simple one, but you might see how difficult the solution is (or perhaps I really am incompetent in FCP, but I appreciate your help nonetheless)…
Here’s the problem: I want to, in the end, put together a film that is in anamorphic, 16:9. Of course, I am filming in anamorphic with my digital video camera. So I set everything to NTSC anamorphic mode in my video settings. That’s all fine, but when I import JPEG images, they look fine in the preview screen, but they keep coming out distorted (no black bars at the top and bottom) when I print to video, burn to DVD, or export to Quicktime file… How do I work with anamorphic and get a 16:9 widescreen format without distorting my still images?
Your help would be much appreciated.

Do you have any version of Photoshop CS?
If so, the simplest way to do this is to go into Photoshop and select “New” from the File menu.
Select the preset: “NTSC DV Widescreen, 720×480 (with guides)”
Open your images and drag them into that new image. Size them however you want them to look and save that as a Photoshop document or TIFF. Then import that into FCP.
There are more direct ways to do this right in Final Cut but this one is nice because it corrects for the pixel changes so what you see in Photoshop is what you’ll get in the final video.

Work with a video monitor that can display 16:9 anamorphic. Nope, “mom’s TV” won’t work, you gotta join the big boys and get a true video monitor that can handle a proper 16:9 anamorphic frame. Other than that, yer gonna suffer.
