  • How do I use shatter to break apart a word into individual characters?

Posted by Accountneedsrealnameupdate on June 27, 2006 at 7:19 pm

I’m trying to replicate this effect, https://www.ayatoweb.com/ae_tips_e/ae37_e.html# and I have a few questions…

    ——————
First, when they say “Prepare the material of fill in white”. Does that mean duplicate my logo text layer and change the fill color to white?
    ——————–

    ——————–
Next they say “Put the materials of step 1 into a new composition”. How are they doing this? Are they going to Layer>Precompose?
    ——————–

    ——————–
Now my main question is about step 2. In their video they used shatter to cleanly break apart their logo text into individual characters. When I use shatter I can get it to ‘somewhat’ follow the character structure but mine always has hundres of tiny shattered pieces, whereas in the tutorial its totally clean, just the individual colors. How can I acheive this? I am using my white invisible logo text layer as the custom shape map and no luck. Any ideas?
    ——————–

    ——————–
Finally they say to use time remapping to play it backwards. When I select my text layer with the shatter effect, Enable Time Remapping is greyed out and not accessible. Why is that?
    ——————–

    Thanks for the help,
    Tom

The simplest solution is to import your shape as a vector file. Shatter will recognize individual entities/ letters if you use the same vector as a shatter shape reference. Use the continuously rasterize switch to make sure of that. For the time reversal you need to pre-compose, therE’s no way around that.

So shatter doesn’t recognize text characters created within AE itself?

rather than just tinting the text black and white to make the shapes, if possible, I prefer to make each letter into a black box…. so each box covers one letter onle and doesn’t overlap. sort of like this (but obviously the boxes would line up with the letters underneat)

Sorry, I don’t understand what you are doing with the boxes. Can you explain?

use the boxes as the shatter map instead of just using filled in text. This way I have found you don’t get the little bits of shatter around the letters. Just make sure that one box covers one letter.

So shatter doesn’t recognize text characters created within AE itself?

No, it doesn’t, since the text is treated as bitmap layers, meaning Shatter has no chance of detecting unique contiguous shapes/ contours. This is more a limitation of Shatter rather than being a problem of the text (if you could tell shatter to e.g. use text animators, things would be easy).
