  • How do I use alternate codecs (Vegas 6)

I admit I’m very new to Vegas, just started playing with it (prior to that I was using Nero 6 as a very basic video editor, prior to that Pinnacle Studio, but Pinnacle seemed to mess up every other application on my PC)

I’m trying to render using XVid or DivX or one of the many codecs out there but I can’t figure out how to do it, I’m using the render option (I assume that’s the right one?) but it seems to have a few predefined options, I’ve tried customizing most of them but not found anywhere to put in a codec, anyone help? Please..

Any particular reason for you wanting to use XVid or Divx?

Most delivery formats are for a DVD or SVCD and then one would use mpeg for this option giving you maximum quality.

If size is an issue, you can vary the bitrates at which the output is rendered at.

    Cheers

Size vs quality vs delivery format, basically I don’t normally create DvD’s or SVCD’s of my videos, I just leave them lying around the hard drive and play them on my laptop for people to see if they are interested, occasionally I upload for the web, where of course maximum quality for minimum file size is the name of the game.

Given that, creating MPEG videos just isn’t really very useful to me, and I know a number of the codecs out there are better than MPEG.

File – Render As – pick AVI as the format – go into “Custom” and you should be able to pick those formats if they’re properly installed.

NOTE: DivX and XVid aren’t officially supported by Vegas.
