    Hello!

What is the cheapest route to play XDCAM EX footage within Vegas ?

I found 1 codec that works at https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/store/WindowsIndividualStore.asp It’s $149.00 to purchase, WOW! I have downloaded the demo version of this & it did work. But $149.00 is a lot!

I have read that buying an QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Windows for $19.99 may work ? As the XDCAM EX footage is actually a MPEG-2 based file ? is this true ? I don’t want to spend $20.00 on something that won’t work!

Or is there something free out there, codec wise, that will allow Sony Vegas Pro 12 to play XDCAM EX footage files for free ?

    Thanks!

    Shawn.

Vegas Pro 12.0 can read and writes XDCAM EX natively. You don’t need any codec. Try View | XDCAM Explorer (Ctrl+Alt+5).

    That’s weird!

OK I’ve had a problem for a while now where my windows explorer within Vegas will not see ANYTHING! No files no directory NOTHING. All my older versions worked but 12 did not. Several months ago I reinstalled it to see if the problem was fixed. No luck! When I go to view then click on windows explorer it see’s nothing, no folders, no files, no way to navigate, nothing!

So I’ve been having to open windows explorer outside of Vegas then dragging & dropping my files unto the Vegas timeline, this work around has worked except with these XDCAM EX files. When I import them into Vegas it imports audio only, no video.

I found a codec that worked. It cost $149.00 to purchase. I have the demo installed right now. Vegas now reads the XDCAM EX files, BUT the files have watermarks all over them because I have a demo codec installed. Any suggestions ?

    Thanks John!! !!

I assume these are QuickTime files? If so, that’s your problem. I realize from the other post that someone gave you an SD card with these files on them but I’d love to know what camera shoots XDCAM EX in a QuickTime container.

Vegas Pro expects to find XDCAM EX files in their native MP4 format. You can try renaming one of the files from MOV to MP4 and see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, you’ll need to buy a codec to deal with these files. They are formatted for a Mac not a PC.

    Hello John!

Thanks for the help! Ok I found out that the camera is a JVC ProHD GY-HM750 which can natively shoot in MOV or MP4. They chose MOV to shoot in, then gave me the files, Nice! So I guess I will take it back to them & have them convert it so I can use them.

    Thanks for your help John!

Interesting… So I guess if you own a Mac you would select MOV and if you own a PC you would select MP4 and they either didn’t know or are Mac users. Yea, if you don’t want to spring for the price of a codec, tell them that you can’t edit the files unless they are MP4.

BTW, the Mac is just as picky. I can’t get FCP X to recognize my AVCHD files unless I have the entire SD card contents. Luckily, I’ve been archiving the entire contents of my SD cards so I’m not having any problems with Vegas Pro or FCP X in recognizing my footage but I definitely don’t recommend copying individual files off of SD cards.

I render AVCHD files/projects to the EXCAM template and the use Handbrake to finish the process to MP4. Works very well and plays on everything. EXCAM by itself does not.

Yes. Any QT MPEG-2 codec should get you going. Bummer QT does not support MPEG-2 out of the box.

Hi Shawn, I had this same issue and it seems that the only codec that works is the Calibrated one. With that said, I found a way around this although the clips did lose quality slightly. Use a video converter – I tried using some of the one’s aimed at the prosumer range such as MpegStreamClip but unfortunately you have to have the XDCAM EX Codec installed! So I downloaded a standard converter and it seemed to work fine. Try this – the audio quality will be lost so I recommend that you sync up the XDCAM footage (the audio still shows on the timeline) with the newly converted clips and it should be alright. Here’s the converter I used:
