We shoot with the Sony Z5U. It’s a wonderful camera for the money. Beautiful picture. We also shoot with the Sony PDW-F330 and F350 XDCAM cameras. Often we have to mix the cameras, shoot a-cam with the F350 and b-cam with the Z5U. Picture-wise they match well. My problem is that when we load the media to FC, the HDV footage has to be converted to work in the timeline with the XDCAM footage. When we do this, the Z5U footage turns to mud. It loses so much picture quality.
We cut it together in the timeline as XDCAM because when the edit is finished we dub real-time to XDCAM disc for archive. Works very well.
Any suggestions for how to cut the two different formats together without losing picture quality? Thank you.

Have you tried to directly capture the HDV footage from the Z5 as ProRess 422? It could be the color spaces clashing with eachother.

I am by no means a pro, and it is very possible that what I am suggesting is jibberish, but it might be worth a try. I capture all my HDV footage as ProRess 422 and have combined it frequently with DVCproHD footage from the HVX200 and they go together great.

    Good luck!

Don’t try to mix the GOP formats on the timeline…not only is that VERY taxing on the computer and might cause a LOT of crashing, converting one GOP format to the other, via rendering, looks like poop.

Edit BOTH formats in a ProRes timeline. you’ll have to render both in the end, but they will both benefit from the render…and look good.
