  • How do I make video black and white? (Grr, why is Avid so complicated? )

How do I turn footage black and white in Avid Media Composer? I love Avid but, it makes the simplest action so complicated. I have Adobe CS3 and Premiere has a B&W effect in the effects pallate that you just drop onto the footage.

Is there an easy way to do it in Media Composer? I don’t see “Black and White” in Avids effects palatte…
Also, how can I apply this effect to the entire timeline without having to do it to each individual clip?

Effects Palette–>Image–>Color Effect. Pull the saturation all the way out. Adjust Brightness Contrast as needed.

To apply it to the entire video, make a new video track above all of your footage. Add the effect to that. It will effect everything underneathe it.

Now that you cleared that up, how can I make parts of a clip hold it’s current color and the balance in black and white. This has driven me nuts. Any help would be great. I use Avid Media Composer in case that is helpful for you to know.

This is the Pleasantville Effect. Depending on the colors in your shot, try this (simplified example).

Put the same clip on V1 and V2. Let’s say it’s a Red Rose on a green background.

    V2: [CLIP_A]
    V1: [CLIP_A]

On V1, add your color effect or color correction and make it Black and White. On V2, add a Spectramatte Keyer effect.

Hold Ctrl (PC) or Cmd (Mac, I think) and click the Monitor on V2 to show only that layer. It will turn green.

Open your effect editor and use the keyer to choose the color you want to keep. For this example, choose the Red in the rose.

Pull your key so all the Red is gone, then choose to Invert your key (it’s an option in the Spectramatte keyer). You may have better luck if you invert first then adjust your key.

Now click the monitor on V2 again so it isn’t highlighted green. You’ll now see the Red from the rose, which you keyed out then inverted to keep only the red, over the same clip–which you made black and white.
