how do I make an effect that will fade out then in audio?
THis is driving me crazy. I need to fade out then fade in audio over and over again. I can apply a filter that will let me fade to black and fade back up. But I can’t find a standardized way to do the same thing with audio.
I know I can use the pen tool and do it manually. The only filters for audio are the 0db and +3db transitions.
I know there has got to be a way to do this. Please help!

If you’re using FCP 5 or later, you can use the audio mixer for this. Just open up the mixer under the “Tools” menu and do it manually.

Option W turn on Clip Overlay
P turns on pen tool
Add four points close to each other by clicking once for each point to one track (affects both tracks if they are stereo)
Hold the A key down (reselects the selection tool) and then Drag the line down between the middle two points.
It fades out and then fades back up. Timing is determined by how far apart you make each keyframe point. If it is a tight transition (quick fade down nad then right back up, then only three points are needed. Click for two points with space in between (points 1 and 3) then add point 2 in the middle and hold the mouse button down to drag that point down. It will fade out and then back in quickly.
I use Show Audio Waveforms to see quiet areas to apply the fades. I also use Add edit (Control V) and drag some space in between the clips. Then just right click to Add default transition to the out and in of each new clip in the usual way of crossfades. Make your own new default settings if they are different and used a lot. Such as 2 second crossfades or four seconds. Whatever works.

You can also map effects to the keyboard, I have F1 set for the default video transition fade, just select the edit, hit f1 and bam, dissolve. Go to the tools menua dn select keyboard layout. Click in teh search field and hit apple+T, then drag the effect that pops up to where you want it. Both the video dissolve and the audio dissolve will show up. I have the F1 key mapped for the video transition and apple+F1 for the audio dissolve. Then learn to love the razor blade tool. I do most of my audio editing in Protools, but with the razor blade and the apple+F1 shortcut I can get most things done in FCP.
