  • How do I make a camera move in a 3D circle?

Posted by Norman Greenwood on April 6, 2009 at 9:49 pm

I have been messing around with the camera layer in AE and have a random question:

If I want the camera to move in a circle around an object (e.g. a sphere), is there a way to make the camera revolve around the object to make a complete 360 degree circle around it?

Granted, I understand the orientation will need to be changed, but I can’t think of a simple way to perform the task asked above.

    Thanks for the help.

    Thanks for the response, Dave.

I am getting hung up on the first two parts though; I believe I may just be over-thinking.

What do you mean when you say, “Put a null object at the anchor point of the sphere layer”?

And, “Point the camera at the sphere layer and make the sphere layer LOOK AT (an expression term) the camera”?

For the first part, I am imagining that you match the anchor points of both the sphere layer and null object.

For the second part, I am quite confused with the “LOOK AT” expression term.

Again, thanks for the help. It is much appreciated.

If all you want to do is make the camera rotate around an object, it is really simple as Dave said. Create a null object. Place the null position at the position of the object around which you want to rotate. Create a new camera. Position the camera the distance away from the object you want it to be. Parent the Camera to the null. Now adjust the rotation of the null object and the camera will rotate around the null (and your object since they have the same position) in 3d space.

    Best of luck
