  • How do I lock a sliding the video layer in the timeline

I screwed up. All my layers, which were created from a single video file (using Ctrl+Shft+D to split a layer into separate layers) got screwed around. Now the picture doesn’t match what it should–the visible portions of the video somehow got “slid” so that it’s revealing a different part of the video. I need to “slide” them all back in place. Usually, holding down the SHIFT key will snap an item into place. But not so with a sliding video layer. They just slip and slide everywhere. Quite annoying. Anyway I can “justify” all these (30) layers with a single command so they all line up at the same spot?

Thank you! That will do it. Great tip.

I wish there were a way to “restore” or reset to the original start-point of the layers. But I don’t think After Effects “remembers” original positions of layers in a timeline. My video track layers still seem a bit garbled. Ack! I might be starting all over.

Oops. Correction. This handy shortcut actually didn’t solve the problem. This shortcut actually justifies the “visible video” portion of the layer. But there is a greyed out portion of the layer that can also be slipped back and forth. And it’s the greyed out portion that has become completely out of whack. Weirdly, you can slide both the visible video portion and the greyed out portion, which means that one mistake (accidentally slipping and sliding either part of that layer) throws the whole project out of whack. What is the solution to prevent and/or restore this?

It’s hard to explain, but if import a 10 second video layer, and then you Ctr Shft D the layer to split it into two 5 second layers, you’ll notice that the original 10-second layer is now available to BOTH layers, except half of it is greyed out. My problem is if you accidentally manipulate this greyed out layer (or the visible portion) you have not moved all your cuts around.
