  • How do I improve the quality of my DVDs?

    Hi all,

I’m trying to make a DVD of some footage shot on a PD150. I’m using FCP HD, on a full loaded dual processor G4, but I’m having problems getting a decent quality DVD.
What codec should I use to get the best results from PAL footage? Currently I’m getting juddering on moving objects, and green blocks appear whenever the subject becomes brightly lit. The project is 40 mins long, and contains 1 video layer, 2 audio tracks, + 1 graphic layer.
    Many thanks for your time.

    Regards & best wishes

    Dave

Does the footage look good in FCP, but bad on the DVD?

For the PD150P via FW you should be using the “DV PAL” Easy Setup for FCP.

Are you trying to export from FCP directly to Compressor?

It should be better if you don’t.

Just open your edit in FCP then choose:

File (menu) > Export > Quicktime Movie > Current Settings, Audio and Video, do not check Make Movie Self-contained.

Then, just drop THAT new exported file directly into iDVD and let that software compress it.

If you are using DVD Studio Pro, you should choose to use the QT Movie file you EXPORTED (and not try to send directly to Compressor from FCP.

Sounds vaguely like symptoms similar to those caused by consumer mini-DV players. Those can be hard to see at first glance at times.

Many thanks for you input Jeff. But I think I’ve sorted out the problem. 1: My DVD player is on the blink!! 2: I was using the wrong codec 3: And last but not least….sub standard recordable DVD’s!! I did a test wish a Sony disc, and an unbranded disc, and you really can see the difference.
    Many thanks again
