  • How do I get my 7d footage to transcode to into a workflow for fcp6?

Posted by Reese Guy on March 21, 2010 at 12:28 am

I just picked up a 7d yesterday and I can not seem to get the footage to transcode to edit in FCP 6. I installed the software from cannon and the video goes onto the computer fine. But when I try to play it back on Quick Time it only plays about 75% of what ever I recorded and then my Mac book pro Locks up and then I have to do a force quit. This also happens if I try to play the footage on final cut, the apple compressor, and mpeg streamclip. I also went to Canon website and downloaded a new plugin called CE1100X which they say you need to properly get your footage onto fcp6. But nothing is working. Is there a certain codec or something that I am missing?

Thanks for any help you can give.

You need to transcode all of the files to ProRes in Compressor then edit those files.

Is this the plugin you used?

This one came out just the other day.

Note that I don’t own a Canon DSLR and I’ve never gone through this process but I may get the new T2i in the future and have been watching out for this rumored plugin. Just read about it this morn.

I’ve just purchased a 550D (T2i in the US) and look forward to the Canon plugin supporting it, but Compressor and MPEG Streamclip are fine for now. Believe me, it’s worth a little hassle. EX1 level low light shooting, very sharp footage. Totally broadcastable after transferring. Identical to the 7D video for half the money… (PS – I know of several promos done for the BBC on 7Ds on the sly, as officially the BBC and other don’t accept 7D footage.) Great fun.

I just got my T2i the other day and love it!!! Have only filmed a couple of clips and haven’t even pulled them off the cam yet but it looks like a great addition to my arsenal! Looking forward to some shallow DOF goodness among other things. Great camera for the money but very hard to find in stock right now! They sell out quickly after listed online.

Could it be that my memory card is to slow. I have a 16g but it has a 20mb speed. Does it need to be faster to playback the footage correctly?

I am struggling with this issue. Before I realized I had to convert my 7D stuff to ProRes I put about 30 hours in editing the stuff down…

So now I realize I have to convert the footage to something. I have FCP 6, one that doesn’t support their new fix to use the Log and Capture feature.

How do you think I should convert the stuff to a usable format?

    Thanks

Yes, I think you do have to convert it. Otherwise you’ll likely not get what you wanted in the end. h.264 files do very strange things when compressing for a DVD or web stream etc… from them.. better to do it right from the get go.

Thanks. So, does that mean that all the work I did is lost? Is there anyway to tranpose the cuts I made/edits I’ve done on top of the new files?

Also, how do you recommend I convert it?

    Thanks!

So, I went ahead and converted the files using Mpegstream into ProRes 422 unscaled. The issue I am realizing is that I shot in different sizes (1920×1080/1280×1080/640×480) and 24,30,and 60 fps. So I am basically trying to edit together shots in all these different formats…

The work I am doing will show on a large screen (in the museum of natural history, in 2 weeks!!!!) any tips would be appreciated about this formatting issue….
