  • How do I get 9-pin control on my Xpress Pro 4.6.5?

I have a 4.6.5 running on a dual G4 1.25, under OS 10.3.8 and I have a keyspan 28X USB to serial adaptor. I’d like to plug my JVC BR-DV3000 in via RS-422. I have a cable that I used with my Media 100, but everything in the Avid manual says I need to convert it to RS-232 first, then add another cable, etc.!!!! Why does Avid have to make this so complicated? Can’t I just plug my 9-pin cable into the keyspan into the mac and control it?

If not, what sort of 422 to 232 adaptor am I supposed to buy? They don’t mention a specific brand that’s compatible in the manual.

I’ve had the best experience with Rosetta Stone RS422 to RS232 converters. You can’t just plug a 9 pin cable in directly and expect it to work because 422 and 232 are different signals. It must me converted.

OK, i just spoke with Addenda, who make the Rosetta Stone products. They can’t see how I could need one, since the mac has 422 built in, not 232. Currently, I have a cable that connects the 9-pin on the deck to my Keyspan 28X USB to Serial converter. I have used this configuration for years with my Media 100 without any problems.

I guess I just don’t understand where the RS-232 comes into play, since the mac is already working at 422.

Avid -> Settings -> Deck Configuration -> Add channel -> Port -> Auto configure

    MPE:

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! that was pretty much all I needed to do; have the keyspan driver in the system, set it up in the deck configurations and go…

I do not understand why AVID goes to great lengths to make it sound like you need 232 protocols when using a Mac — you just don’t. That whole section in the book is a misprint, apparently…
