How do I find how many (audio) channels are on the tapes?
If I remember correctly, our camera operator miked the two interviewees with individual wireless microphones.
If my video had 2 or more audio channels, how would I see that?
I turned on View > Mixing Console, and confirmed “Show Channel List” is selected, but found nothing beyond what was already in the timeline.
I read the help file about Channel Strips but did not see my answer there.
Could my capture device have merged the channels into one?
(I use “Windows Import Video” program with “RICOH OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller” device.) -

You don’t say which version of Vegas, but that’s pretty much a moot issue here.
DV is normally two channels of 16-bit audio, so your shooter probably fed the wireless mics into both channels. (Consumers call this “stereo”). If you capture the DV to Vegas, you will have one audio track in the timeline which should contain two audio channels. One from each mic.
I don’t like the way that Vegas treats two-channel audio tracks like everyone records with stereo mics, but the first thing I do is to duplicate the audio track then right click on the top one and select “channels” then “Left Only”, then do the same on the second track but select “right only”. Now you have two tracks corresponding to the two mics.

Thank you. I think there must have been a lot of [bleed] between mic’s/mikes – with both mic’s picking up what both interviewees were saying. I had seen that the audio track had two parts to it, but they were so similar I thought they could not be separate channels. Upon closer inspection I find that yes the loud talker is louder on the left channel than the right.
If DV only carries 2 channels, is there a way to dedicate separate channels for 3 talkers/sources? I guess that would require another recording device (either another camera or an audio-only recorder. I think I just answered my question.

Some cameras can record 4 channels of audio but usually their 32k 16 bit. I’ve neveer recorded that way but I would think it would show 2 stereo tracks of audio when you put it in the timeline. Danny Hays

The DV spec allows for four 12-bit audio channels, and I am only familiar with one camera that had provisions for recording all four at the same time.
If you want more audio channels, then you will need additional recording capability. If you’re going to do a lot of interviews, then get another camera and then you will have two angles for editing and four audio channels.
