  • How do I feather the edge of a Four-Point Garbage Matte?

Posted by Paul Boone on September 12, 2014 at 5:56 pm

I’m trying to Mask out certain unwanted visuals as I do a pan over a product shot (Edges of table, legs etc.) How do I feather the edge of this Matte? “Edge Feather” only feathers the edges of my frame as far as I can tell.

I’m animating this Mask if that effects this at all, to move over time.

    Thanks Guys

I am not sure I totally follow what you are saying but try duplicate the video layer and then do a blur to the layer that has the 4 point matte.

if you can use a crop instead, then go to Creative Impatience and download their partially free plug-in “feathered crop” otherwise you are sol unless you take it into after effects. and if you want some nice everyday useful plug-ins buy Boris bcc9. they have some great plug-ins that Premiere sadly lacks.

Are you doing just a stationary matte?

What I mean is are you wanting to animate points of the mask or just have the mask as a whole move?

I don’t use 4 point Garbage Mattes any more with the new Masking and Tracking feature. Tried that?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Kevin –

I thought the masking feature was for limiting filters to a specific part of the image. Does it also allow you to cut a hole in an image that you can see the video from a lower track through?

    Absolutely, Herb.
    Just use the opacity mask(s).

    1. Put a ‘Four-Point Garbage Matte’ on your clip.
    2. Click on the effect in the ‘effect control’ panel to select the effect.
    3. Use the pen tool in the effect to MASK out where you don’t want your ‘hole’ to be.
    4. Click on the ‘Four-Point Garbage Matte’ effect in the effect control panel to select it.
    5. Move the garbage matte handles off the screen.
    6. Feather your mask to taste.
