  • How do i fade my text up from left to right?

Posted by Oliver Morgan on March 21, 2008 at 7:12 pm

I have some text in After Effects (a separate layer created in Photoshop) that I have applied a light effect to in AE. I would like to have the text fade in as the light effect goes across it, left to right. How can this be achieved? I am new to AE so just finding my way around it at the moment. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

There are any number of ways to achieve this, the most efficient method really depends on how you’re creating your ‘light effect’ and what that effect is. Can you provide any additional information?

I am using a Trapcode plugin called ‘Shine’ which is creating an effect of rays of light passing across the text. I’d like to give the impression the text is appearing as the light passes across it. At the moment, I have the text fading up, but it does so consistently across the length of it. And as a result, because the light rays affect the visible text, it is appearing in areas I would rather have a slight delay on, if that makes sense.

The easiest way to do this would probably be with a rectangular Mask. You can draw masks with the Pen tool (‘p’) or use preset shapes (‘q’). Reveal the mask properties (‘mm’) and animate the mask path property over time, you may also want to add a feather so that it doesn’t reveal with a hard edge.

    On your text layer,
    ad an Animator for opacity,
in that animator change the opacity to 0 and animate the “start” the range selector.
    done 😉
