  • How do I export video to crop size in Final Cut Pro X?

Posted by Ritesh Saini on August 9, 2020 at 12:27 pm

I started a project with 4K format and resolution 3840×2160. Later, I cropped the clips to a smaller size.

Aspect ratio is still 16:9, just the resolution is smaller than the original clip.

The cropped size is around 3000x*whatever its 16:9 ratio equivalent is*

Now when I send it to the compressor for export, it shows the option for standard sizes like 4K and 1080p. How do I export it to the actual crop size?

Sorry if it is a silly question, but I started using FCPX this morning.

[Ritesh Saini] “Later, I cropped the clips to a smaller size.”

How did you accomplish this? Did you make a new Project at your desired output size? That would be a quick way to do this as then the port will be at the Project size. (3000xwhatever)

    Here’s what I exactly did:

When I started my project, I selected 4K format because my clips are in 4K

After dragging the clips to the timeline, I cropped them with the same 16:9 aspect ratio. That changed the size of those clips to (3000xwhatever). But project setting is still set to 4K

If I export the clips now, FCP exports them to 4K, which basically ruins the quality because of the upscaling.

So, isn’t there any way to dynamically change the project resolution according to the resolution of the clips in the timeline?

First, Snapshot your Project which creates a duplicate.

Then select your Project, open the inspector, and click “Modify” in the inspector.

This will bring up a dialogue to change the size of the Project.

Change the Format to Custom and enter the dimensions.
