  • How do i export Cineon/DPX files?

Posted by Dan Pearce on November 4, 2005 at 5:30 pm

Hi I could really do with some help…

I’m adding some logos to DPX images which then need to go back to the post house in DPX format so they can be put onto 35mm.

I’ve worked out how to import a DPX file – but how do i export it as either a DPX or Cineon file?

It says Cineon export is supported in the manual but for the life of me i can’t find where it actually shows me how to do it!

    In the render que
    Output module: cineon sequence
format options pulls up a dialoge box, at the bottom you should see the dpx option to click, DPX is a type of cineon. Hope this helps.

Yes that does help, many thanks

If your feeling overly generous can you tell me this – as i’m only overlaying white text to the image and then going back to film is there any reason to do a log-lin conversion?

You may want to read Stu Maschwitz’s blog about AE7 and Linear color workflow. It helped me understand a bit more about DPX files.

    https://prolost.blogspot.com/2006/02/linear-color-workflow-in-ae7-part-5.html

To my understanding, it is ideal to receive Log DPX files to work with, bring them into AE’s 32-bit (float) workspace, use the conversion effect to convert them to Linear, and then convert them back to Log when rendering back out to a Cineon DPX sequence. But someone please correct me if I’m wrong, as I’m new to this format as well.
